Chapter 26 – Croatoan

Jeffrey stretched. Everything was going to plan. The only thing that wasn’t going according to his strict procedures was a visual of the subject. He had no idea how Ronnie was handling this. She was the first person to ever go back in time … wait, he kept forgetting. She was the second person but that was not public information. Neither was Ronnie and her adventures, but perhaps he’d be able to share the research if he could get her to retroactively sign an agreement. No use worrying about that now.

First things first. Power was building up from the last expenditure, the storm was cooperating fully with his needs. He imagined toasting Hannah for supersizing Hurricane Frances, and a second toast for her steering skills. They were spot-on. What an absolute godsend to have her at the lab. He really had to pat himself on the back for making those arrangement and private donations to her research. She was proving to be a formidable scientist.

His computer barked at him, “Beep, beep, beep.”

“Excellent.” Now to add a variable to her travels. A visual of Ronnie’s state of mind and physical heartiness would have been a reassurance but without that data, he would have to continue and add that information later. One of the things that made Ronnie a good subject was her extroverted nature. She always openly shared every detail of her life with him, at least if he played nice and didn’t antagonize her too much. Another great asset.

He glanced over the notes in the experiment notebook. He had conducted trials on the same location but two different time periods by sending Ronnie to London in 1752 and then 1666. The small stop in the Bahamas in 1952 was the unknown drop time and he fervently hoped it had been a success. The computer tracking device implanted in Ronnie showed movement so she had survived the return trip. The first two trips were straight line shots to a parallel month and date in the past where the Bahamas trip went back to March of 1952. He was eager to find out if Ronnie had entered the host body in the right location. Damn Stephanie McKay for screwing up that portion of the feedback. He couldn’t be sure everything was going well with Ronnie and the parameters of the experiment.

This next experiment would be a beautiful disaster and quite important to the very beginning of the nation. As long as everything cooperated nicely and he didn’t end up stranding Ronnie. Would she hold up physically? He really didn’t know the full effects on the human form, especially with multiple trips. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, though, and he’d have to take the risk.

He keyed in the trajectory in the time and space coordinates, double-checked the code and details of travel and checked his watch. It had been an hour since the last trip. Everyone should be asleep and quiet in the house. Jeffrey checked the connection to TOTO and all was well.
